simple things.

I'll always remember, in my very first semester of college, one of my professors shared something that impacted me. She explained that in her early twenties she lost both parents, suffered serious health issues and various other life struggles. Honestly, she told our class that she stumbled into negative thinking and constant grumbling. When she woke each morning, she thought "Ugh, another awful day ahead. Nothing good ever happens to me." After time passed, she decided to change her negative attitude. She chose to view life differently - in a positive perspective. She said she became tired of viewing life negatively. Yes, she'd experienced hardship, pain, and severe suffering - yet, she decided to take control of her attitude. So she chose to wake up each morning and say, "Today is going to be a beautiful day! Something wonderful might happen!" Practically, she decided to memorize scriptures on thankfulness. And she bought a journal that she filled each day with at least 4 or 5 things she was grateful for. Her words and example impacted me. At the time, I bought a small notebook and those first years in college before I went to bed each night, I wrote a few things down in that notebook - things I was thankful for. Some days, I wrote big things like "faithful friends" or "provision to pay my school bill" and some days, all I could come up with were small things like "chai lattes" or "my new jeans." Sadly, I wandered away from the habit of practicing this thankfulness daily and recently started writing down my daily "thankful list" again. I'm amazed at what an impact this small act has on my thinking.
Friend, we cannot control what happens in our life. But we can control our attitude, our response, our perspective. We can control how we live our lives, how we think, and how we act. I encourage you this Monday start of the week: take a moment and write down at least 4 or 5 things you are grateful for. We all have blessings, however small they may be. Simple things, little things - they are beautiful. Remember your blessings today along with me.

Be blessed, sweet one!

  1. Love your new header photo! Soon, I'm starting a 1000 things I'm thankful for project. I think it's so true that you have to constantly be aware of your attitude. Thanks for the reminder, Erin!

  2. I do this too! I started after reading One Thousand Gifts. I love it!

  3. simply beautiful and sooo true!

a couple years ago i was such a negative person. i knew something needed to change and that something was my attitude and outlook on life. i stumbled across the secret and finally GOT it! the light bulb went off. then i started to go to church more, talk about my faith more openly with other and life got better. i began to practice being grateful and giving God praise for every single thing. thank you for posting this :)

  4. great post! i've been kind of negative lately, so last night i wrote an "i will" list, of some simple things that i will be able to achieve, they just won't be easy at all. i love this idea of a thankful list! i am going to start doing that tonight. thanks so much for your inspiration.

  5. My p.e. coach from middle school had a saying on her wall that was "I feel great, I feel fine, I feel this way all the time". Now she was a very moody person so I feel like she didn't read that enough lol but I always like to say that when I get up in the morning. Silly I know. But yes, keeping in touch with the things we are thankful for really is powering!

  6. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been a little "down" lately....Thinking about what has happened in a year. Things
I didn't even expect and things not happening that I totally expected to happen. So, here I am hoping this next year brings some things I have been hoping for along.

But, in the meantime this thankfulness exercise could work wonders! God is at work. Why can't I just trust Him? And be full of His joy and peace.....I am sure He's getting me there!

  7. sooooooooooo goood! what truth!

  8. This is great! It's something that God has been teaching me more about personally as well. We can't control everything, and in reality, we control very little, but we CAN control our attitude. There's so much to be grateful for, I like the idea of a thankful list!

  9. I love my thankful list too! :)

Whup! Whup! I can't wait till football season either!!!! Haha

  10. So happy you found my blog because I love yours! This is a great post. I look forward to reading more!

  11. what a lovely post!! yes, life is sweet when we count our blessings...and if we take the time to notice and pay attention, we have many blessings...
I am your newest follower..pls follow back if you can.
    have a great week!

  12. I love your blog.
Thanks so much for sharing this... <3

  13. LOVE this. And so timely, too. Gratitude/thankfulness is something God has been working in me the last year, and the message at church yesterday was on being grateful. Life is SO different when I realize I'm not entitled to ANYTHING. That every second, every person, and every thing in my life is an example of God's mercy. I love your idea of writing down things you're thankful for in a journal. I think I'll start that tonight :)

  14. Thank you so much for writing this! Last week, I started my journey to recommitting my life to Jesus. I'm on this journey alone and finding your blog, was like God telling me, "Hey, go here." Thank you for reminding me to be thankful for the little things :)

  15. I just said this to someone not long ago. You choose to wake up with a smile on your face because someone else chose for you to wake up to the day.

  16. I too used to do this every day, sometimes big things or just a lovely smelling candle, clean sheets. It really did make a huge impact! I really need to get back to more gratitude and less mumbling! Thanks for the reminder Sweetie! ;)

  17. This is so true...I can't believe how easy it is to fall into negativity even over small things.

Thank you so much for your comment on my blog! I'm so excited to have found yours - I love it! Can't wait to get to know you better.

  18. how inspiring! So true! I need to do this starting now! :) love this post! thank you!

and i am receiving it girl!

  21. Firstly, you look beautiful! VERY!

And the pictures you added here are like you. Beautiful. :)

Loved the title of the blog! :) Keep it up! :)

  22. Hi there,
Thank you so much for writing this post.
Thank you for reminding us how important the little things are. I shall be writing my list tomorrow bright and early.

    Ever Sincerely,

  23. love this anecdote and i agree with you completely! beautiful inside and out ;) if you like my blog too, do you want to follow each other? xoxo jess

  24. I cannot tell you how much I love this post. I try my very hardest to be an optimist, and 98% of the time I am, but some days I just don't see the light in anything. But then I started reading the Bible and praying every night, and I realized that there is definitely something special in every day, even if its something like green grass.

Thank you so much for posting this beautiful:)

  25. You have no idea how much I needed this right now! It seems I am CONSTANTLY drowning in negative thoughts. Most of them stem from bitterness, anger, and unforgiveness. It's a terrible problem that I have yet to change. Probably because I haven't given it up to the Lord yet. Go figure right?! Anyway, thank you for sharing this Erin. You always have such wise words! I am definitely going to give this a try. Starting today! God bless you sister! :)

  26. Such a sweet reminder! I started a gratitude journal a few years ago as a Lenten discipline. You are so true... it is a big attitude- and outlook-adjuster. I've dropped off the past couple months but this is a good prompt to pick it up again.

  27. Isn't it amazing when you learn something once and then learn something totally new doing it again? This is a lovely post. I will definitely be coming back.
And tomorrow is Monday! Perfect day to start changing my attitude!

  28. i am a million years behind on reading blog posts so i am only just reading this - and i can't even tell you how much i needed to tonight. i just moved back to my parents' and i have been dreading it and angry about it all day. and i realized, this isn't my favorite thing, but i'm grateful that i have a place to live right now, that they're willing to give me back my bedroom until i'm able to move out on my own again.

ahhh, Jesus. Your gifts don't look like what we'd expect.

thank you so, so much for these words, Erin. i am so thankful for the Spirit in you!

sweet friends, share your heart.
