// thankful sweetness // ...& a winner.

Happy weekend, dear ones.

I sit and write tonight with a fan blowing cool air directly on me. I love summertime - I love the warm sunshine and breeze. I'd rather be hot than cold. But, good grief - this weather is almost too much. As I type, by my side is a cup of cooled-down vanilla tea. Yes, I put a kettle on my stove and made tea tonight. On a hot August evening - because, if anyone knows me they know I'm all about tradition and sentiment. And though it was almost 110 degrees here today, I made a cup of vanilla tea because when I write it helps inspire me (I know, a little crazy - but hey, whatever works right?) Yet, it sits untouched. I just can't bear to drink down anything that does not contain a generous amount of ice. Because, it's hot and... let's just be honest, this fan's really not helping. I've found it hard to be naturally thankful this week. I've had to work at it. I've had to say "I'm sorry" more than a few times and I've felt a little on-edge....not grateful, not all that thankful. Why is it so hard to be thankful? It's not hard to complain, grumble or feel bad for yourself. But it certainly is easy to stumble into negative thinking, isn't it? I read these few words today and thought... and thought - how easy it is to forget them, simple as they are -

// be thankful in all circumstances //
1 thessalonians 5:18

With new resolve, I want to be grateful. Our lives may not be perfect, ideal, movie-worthy or even glamorous. The crazy summer heat may not help our moods and our financial, relational, or job situations may not make it easy to be cheerful- but with God's help, we can do it. I can choose to have joy. And so can you.

Will you join me, friend? Remember my little thankful lists that I began earlier this summer, here
I want to be proactive about thankfulness - in an even greater way. And so, I propose this idea: I will write my thankful list faithfully, but I need accountability. I need sisters to do it with me - so, will you do it too? Whether you want to do it every night before bed, every couple days, or just once a week - will you scribble down 3, 4, 5...or maybe more things you are thankful for? Will you take a moment and remember the simple blessings in your life? I encourage you to join me. We need each other, friends. We so easily forget, get distracted, get discouraged or caught up in the mundane. And then let's take a quick picture of our lists and share them with one another. Hashtag your lists on Twitter or Instagram with #ThankfulSweetness (or e-mail them to me: and once a week, I'll share your lists on a blog post along with my list.

In the last days, a few of my sweet friends and favorite bloggers have joined me - and their lists inspired and encouraged me:

Hashtag away. I can't wait to encourage each other's hearts to thank God for all He's given.

Remember the giveaway y'all entered for the beautiful gold vintage necklace? Today the lucky winner was chosen...and she is -

Embrace this weekend.
Do one thing that scares you.

Go outside and thank God for at least 5 things you see.
And smile. You are loved.

  1. I'm totally up for this, sister! I am currently re-reading 1000 gifts and started my thankful list last July after reading the book for the first time. Sometime around the beginning of the year I quit counting gifts and this summer I felt the ungratefulness for the blessings in my life. Just this week I picked the book back up and committed to counting blessings again. I need this accountability! Thankful! Can't wait to share my blessings. :)

  2. love this! and i've really enjoyed doing this list. i've realized if i'm having a bad day, and i do this, it makes the day a bit better, even if just for a little bit.

  3. I must do this Erin! Just reading the list of gratefulness almost made me shed a tear of joy. There is so much to be thankful for and I can relate because I have those moments when I just feel like complaining. Thanks so much and great post!

  4. Oooo, I'm just about to start my 1000 Things to Be Thankful for challenge. I will totally hashtag/email join! So excited for this!

  5. Your blog is just too cute! :) Love it! & those thankful lists are such a great idea to reflect.

I'd love for you to check out my blog if you get a chance!

    Happy Weekend! xx

  6. I just love the idea of writing down thankfulness in a notebook. And I totally understand how tea helps with inspiration--I hardly sit down to do ANYTHING without a cup of coffee at my side! I am thankful for your sweet blog that always brings a smile to my face :)

  7. this is such a wonderful idea. I'm going to do my best (with my poor memory) to remember to do it at the end of the day!

  8. Thank you sweet friend! :)

    I am thankful for you!.

  9. Great post, cute instagramming again !

  10. oh man...just when I wanted to have a pity party I read this lol ok, i can take a hint, God. ;-)
thanks Erin, and I'll start doing this too!

  11. What a great idea! Should definitely do this!

  12. Great post and great idea!!!! I should really try to do this.

  13. Erin so thankful for your realness and encouragement i get through your blog. Always a pleasure to read my sweet friend and aim starting my thankful list now!:))

  14. What a wonderful idea! I'M IN!

Have you read 1000 gifts by Ann Vaskomp? Aaaaamazing! She starts a challenge to herself to think of 1000 things she is thankful for... and then challenges the reader to start their own list. It's not as easy as it sounds..and it makes you really get creative AND thankful :) Just a suggestion!!!

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

  15. I started my list after reading 1000 Gifts, but you've given me encouragement to keep it up. I've been slacking a little! I will definitely be doing it along with you :)

  16. i totally make lists when i am feeling down, it is so easy to see all the negative stuff i don't have but when i write everything down i can't help but smile because i am blessed with so much, and I don't deserve any of it but God has blessed me with so much

  17. Hi! I just found your blog and I absolutely live it! I added your button to my sidebar and I was wondering if you could return the favor for me ajd add my button to your blog somewhere? I would appreciate it so much! If the size of my button doesn't work for your blog just let me know and I can make a new one! Thanks :)

  18. I was having a not so stellar day today and this post put a smile on my face. :-)

  19. I love it! What a great idea! I know sometimes it's hard to be grateful--this world lies to us about our needs in life. But the Lord is always faithful in providing for our needs, and for that we must be thankful. I'll try to remember to do these lists! :)

  20. I'm completely like you! I NEED accountability. Mainly because I often forget to take time out of my day to do those little things like this. But often times those little things are usually what can turn my day around! Just taking the time to think about what you're thankful for and the blessings in your life can have a tremendous difference in your outlook! And if you're ever feeling down and can't think of the blessings in your life (like I was today) there's at least one thing everyone can be thankful for... You're alive!! :)

Thanks for the inspiration Erin! I will definitely keep up my list and share on IG!

sweet friends, share your heart.
