My heart has really been aching this week after what I shared with you all in my last post. As I look around our culture, our country, our world - and see how marriage, relationships, and sex are treated like a game and a sport, it makes me feel so discouraged. After I (nervously) published my last post, a sadness just fell on me - grief for our generation, for young people who don't see the value in faithfulness, in waiting, in staying true to vows, and in not settling for anything less that God's best. I have a passion here on this little space to encourage precious people to be different than the world - to bravely take a stand and refuse to go along with the flow or to believe lies. To hold out for true love, for faithful love, to ask God to bring the person He has for you in His time. To wait for Him to direct you to the right person at the right time, even if that means a season of loneliness and of saying "no" now so that later you can say "yes" - forever.

My mom sent me this little video the night I wrote the Miley post. My eyes welled up with tears as I watched the sweet story of this precious couple. This man and woman who faithfully loved for 75 years!

You may have seen this video on the news or social media, but I just must share - it's so sweet and inspiring! For you sweet married friends - may it encourage you to pursue faithfulness to your spouse! And for you dear single friends - may it encourage you to keep waiting and preparing your heart for this kind of love. It's worth waiting for and love that lasts does exist!

The fallout from yesterday's VMA's is pretty brutal. The reaction from viewers on social media and the media in general is intense. If you haven't heard, Miley Cyrus performed her new song "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines" with Robin Thicke last night. I saw about 5 minutes of the VMA's. After a morning at church and afternoon by the pool with my sisters, I flipped on the TV and sat down on the couch with a bowl of pineapple. Noticing the VMAs on a mainstream channel, I turned it on (hoping to catch a bit of *NSYNC's reunion) and instead my eyes were assaulted with Miley Cyrus' performance. My jaw dropped. My bowl of fruit set to the side. As I watched the horrifying performance unfold, my stomach turned and I literally almost gagged.

As a young 26-year-old woman, I get that MTV is known for raunchiness. I get that some of you careful parents don't even pay for cable TV to be in your home because your goal is to protect your kids from garbage (my family never had anything but clean VHS's growing up and I plan to guard my future children's eyes and minds from most of what is on TV.) Yet, the sad reality is that most children and teens today - Monday, August 26, 2013 - saw Miley's performance last night and/or they will see or hear of her performance today. In this digital age, it's inevitable. It already went viral. And it is being viewed and shared and joked about on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, news websites, and forums. It is being replayed on YouTube videos and on little kid's iPhones at almost every school in America today.

I know some wonderful Christians who are calling us to be loving - to be careful and wise and to not bash or hate on Miley. I agree, absolutely. I've loved some of her music (I used to belt out "Party in the USA" with the best of 'em!) I am praying for her. And if I sat down to chat with this broken, precious young woman I would take her face in my hands as I cried - I wouldn't yell or scream or judge or condemn. I would love her, be there for her, and talk to her honestly. Yet, I am not of the school who believes Christians are called to just be silent. Especially with what goes on in our dark culture. I for one do not believe I am called to smile and nod along with everything the media and our world throws at me. We are called to be strong. To speak boldly. To be upfront. To be very honest. To speak truth in love. And to not be afraid or ashamed to speak out. We are living in a world that is slowly but surely becoming gray. Robin Thicke's nasty song "Blurred Lines" is very telling of where we're at in our culture, isn't it? Lines are becoming blurred and when lines become blurred and boundaries are taken away, people get hurt. There is black and white, wrong and right. It can be so easy to be confused in this day and age. So I feel compelled to write honestly about what is true

I personally felt violated while watching the performance. Disgusted. Shocked. Maybe you did, too. Take a quick look at Twitter this afternoon - many people felt shocked. And you know what the truth is? We should all be shocked and disgusted. And I truly believe it is important to talk about why. I am passionate about being really real and really honest here on my little blog. I think some Christians don't want to talk about real, relevant issues but I'm not one of them. I feel called to really be upfront with you guys - as if we were sitting in my living room chatting about real life over coffee. 'Cause, if I am not real, honest and straight-up with you, then why even write a blog?

3 Reasons Why Miley's VMA Performance Should Shock and Disgust You

1. The performance clearly alluded to and referenced little girls. Teddy bears. Stuffed animals. Pig tails in her hair. A pink and purple teddy bear outfit. Am I the only one who noticed how this performance was styled to look like a scene (possibly a nightmare) out of a child's nursery?

The truth is that 1 in 5 women have been sexually abused. ONE IN FIVE, you guys. That's ALOT. And you know what? Anything that even remotely references little girls and sex in an equation together should be publicly called out and banned. Working with women and girls in ministry for years, I have personally counseled many, many women who have experienced sexual abuse. It's not a joke and it's never, ever something to parade around on stage as entertainment. Not only is it absolutely damaging to viewers (especially children) but it is provocative to perverted people who are sexually attracted to exploiting and abusing children. And who can deny this is unacceptable?

2. The performance was overtly sexual and undeniably pornographic. Let's be honest here: not only did Miley strip down to a skintight, nude latex bra and almost thong underwear that showed most of her bare backside, but her "dance" moves which involved a foam finger could hardly be called a "dance." They were something straight out of a strip club/porn film. I'm not going to link to the video or pictures here because many of my sweet readers are teens. But go read a mainstream news article on CNN, NBC or Fox - you will find that many liberal celebrities and writers are even speaking out, calling her performance sexually explicit. If you have seen it, you can't deny it. (And by the looks of it, poor Will Smith and his family may or may not need therapy after last night's show.)

The Parents' Television Council spoke out in outrage over MTV's choice to allow Miley to perform in this way on stage on a platform accessible to a national audience of all ages. "This is unnaceptable....MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate 'twerking' in a nude colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?"

Undeniably, Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus performed in a pornographic, sexually explicit manner - purposefully and happily exposing millions upon millions of people (including young children) to porn. And this, my friends, is absolutely unacceptable. They are both adults (Thicke, a 36-year-old married father. Cyrus, a 20-year-old engaged woman) and they are responsible for their actions. Yes, we should pray for them. No, we should not hate them or abuse them verbally. But, we need to be upfront and honest about the facts: they performed porn and they are now responsible for that.

3. The performance set a negative, toxic, damaging example for children. Over the past years, Miley played the role of Hannah Montana - she's a former Disney star who - to this day - has a huge following of young kids (especially young girls) and she carries a whole lot of influence. Millions-wide. The fact that she and the production team clearly purposefully styled her performance to call to mind little girl references and pornographic material is incomprehensible to me. Especially when sexual violence and exploitation of children - and particularly little girls - runs rampant in this world.

Take note of the audience positioned right below the stage at eye-level? Young people.

Miley is making a statement in her performance, setting an example of what "being an adult" looks like. She has transitioned from child star to adult star, giving kids a perverted view of what being an adult woman looks like.

*****

My dear readers, I believe it's important to think about why we feel disturbed or disgusted by something. Thinking things through, being smart and really understanding why something in our hearts tells us "that is wrong" is key as we navigate the ever-darkening world and culture we find ourselves in. Stay strong, beautiful friends! Speak truth. Don't back down or get discouraged. Think through why you believe what you do. Be careful what you listen to, watch, and who you look up to: we are very influenced by what we see and hear, and who we admire.

Don't be confused by the blurred lines in our "gray" culture - recognize the black and white - wrong and right. Be encouraged! Be strong! And don't be swayed. Look to Jesus. He is the hope we have in this dark world.

Happy weekend, my sweet friends!

Okay, so ya know how like 3 days ago I told you I'd be sharing the book's website with you tomorrow? Well, since I love doing my own graphic design, it took a bit longer than anticipated (as things do ;) but it is worth the wait!

The Darling Diaries website is here. Ahhhh! (Insert happy dance.)

Click below to explore your little heart out! THIS will be the place where you can get your hot little hands  on the book and purchase it in e-Book form and/or hard, old fashioned copy.... soon!!! (Release date announcement coming - but it will be this fall!)

The website is just a baby still - a bit of a work in progress. You will find some "coming soon's" on pages like "Table of Contents." I'm not givin' away all my secrets yet ;)

BUT, I promise - as the days unfold, I will share more and more details!

Thank you all oh so much for your sweet encouragement, support, and love for this little dream of mine. It's one the Lord placed in my heart when I started my blog, and it's exciting to see it come to fruition. It's also really scary, and a bit overwhelming to self publish one's own book. I am publisher, cover designer, writer, editor, and everything else. I felt God clearly direct me to do it this way, and He is and has given me all the resource and strength I need. I hope and pray this book is a breath of hope to somebody, somewhere. A letter of love from Jesus to you.

Missed the blog post all about the book? Read here.

I love you ALL so much. Thank you for being you.

XO

Erin

Hi beautiful friends!
Today I want to chat for a minute about something close to my heart - The Influence Conference. I know you've heard me talk about it since I attended last year, but today I want to share with you why I really believe you should join me :)

at Influence with the sweetest girls last year!

Why Influence of all conferences? Ok, so blogging is uber trendy and there are more than a few blogging conferences out there. I get it. So why should you choose Influence? Because Influence is all about Jesus. It's all about being real and building real relationships. It's all about community. And it's so encouraging.

Why should YOU go? Because you will be blown away with encouragement, filled up with genuine love, and absolutely empowered and inspired in your life, faith, and ministries - in all areas: your home, your family, your community/church, and your blog! And also? I really believe you should come because I want to meet you.

The blogging community in general is such a blessing, isn't it? I've met such amazing friends through it. And I also love our little community here on Sweetness Itself. You gals who comment and take your precious time to read and pray and be there and identify with one another. Influence Conference gives us a perfect opportunity.... to meet in person - in real life! I often say I just want to sit down with you girls at a coffee house and chat, laugh, cry and pray over our favorite hot drinks. Influence gives us a place to meet!! And have that coffee date! And have it also with a couple hundred of the best women on the planet.

Ladies, I wanna meet you!
Since it can be overwhelming at times to think of attending a blog conference, I want to talk about some lies we believe about why we can't dream big and do something crazy amazing like attend Influence. My sweet friend over @ The Mom Diggity shared a list like this and I am totally copying her fab idea (her list of lies and truth is specific to mothers, so head over there if you're a mom!)

Lie #1: There's No Way I Can Afford It.  Our God is a big God. He can do anything. He places desires and dreams in our hearts and can make them happen regardless of impossible situations, empty bank accounts, and bleak-looking futures. Last year, when everybody was tweeting and talking about attending Influence, I shed a few tears because I just simply couldn't afford it. Yet, through a crazy series of events and a few really precious, generous friends - God opened the door. Take it from me, He can do it. It was a miracle I could attend last year! And He can do the same for you. Pray about it. Ask Him. He can do the impossible! It's not too late!

Lie #2: I can't go because I'm not a blogger / a wife / a mom / in ministry. The great thing about Influence is that it is not a blog conference or a wives conference, a mom's conference or a conference for pastor's wives or people in full time ministry: it's a conference for all of us. It is a place to be loved on and encouraged for what you do and who you are, and a place to connect in a meaningful way with other like-minded women. Influence truly has something for everyone. A place for every woman to connect, feel loved, and get encouraged. Influence inspires each of us to use our Influence for the Lord in every area of lives.

There are workshops and places to connect specifically for the single women (I'm so excited to meet with the single ladies and lead that workshop!), the moms, those who own handmade shops, for bloggers. But as a whole, Influence is a non-cliquey place to connect with amazing women and to connect with God. Last year, I enjoyed dinner with unmarried girls like me, I had coffee with married women my mom's age who have raised 5 kids, and I attended workshops and worship times with ladies younger than me! Such a precious picture of community. I felt totally encouraged and so loved when I left Indianapolis.

Lie #3: I'm too scared to go, what if I feel left out and alone? I promise you won't. Promise! I seriously cannot emphasize enough how loving this particular group of ladies is. Even if you don't know a soul who is attending the conference, you will be embraced with open arms. I am one of the Community Leaders this year, and I know I'm not just speaking for myself when I say that our group of leaders are already praying over you, excited to reach out and meet you, and not afraid to give you a big hug around the neck and invite you you to sit with us! I remember when I first got to college, I didn't have lots of friends yet and I would just agonize over going to Chapel in the mornings because I didn't want to sit alone... it was a real fear for me that caused serious anxiety. So I know that feeling, girls. But at Influence, if you're scared to be alone - find me! Or any of our leaders (meet us here) and we'll take you under our wings and love on you like crazy! I want to connect with you before even, so email me anytime girls. Influence is a place to build real friendships - don't feel scared at all, it's a very loving environment.

Lie #4: I don't have enough followers and I don't fit the "blogger" profile. Doesn't matter what size our blogs are, how big or small - it's not about that at all. It's really not. It's about our hearts. Last year I packed all my most "bloggy" clothes. Rosette flower headbands, stripes, polka dots, anything mint colored... you know the drill. To be honest, I don't really dress that way in real life. But I wanted to fit in. I put together outfits that looked like blogger fashion posts to me, and then I showed up feeling totally uncomfortable... not myself. On top of that, my skin broke out in a huge zit and I literally had the thought: "What if the girls think I just naturally have this zit on my face but I've been photoshopping it out of my pictures?" I over-thought things, I was all nervous. And once I showed up and got past the nerves? I realized I didn't need to be nervous or scared at all. I didn't need to try and "dress like a blogger." The women loved on and welcomed me wholeheartedly. So this time? I'm bringing yoga pants and cute outfits that make me feel comfortable. All of that to say, dear friends - don't be afraid that you're not enough of a blogger or a woman or "cool" enough. You are. Because you're YOU.

Visit the Influence Conference website to learn more and make this thing happen!

And let me know if you need prayer about coming or want to plan a REAL coffee date! Or you have decided to take the plunge and buy tickets.

I can't wait to meet my sweet community there!

Friends, thanks for all the love about my upcoming book this past week.
Check back tomorrow, I'm sharing my new book's website - you don't want to miss it!!

My dear sweet friends!

Today is a really special day. I am finally announcing the name of my book and sharing more about it! Freaking out that after a year and a half, I'm sharing this book with you!!
But I'm also celebrating a very special anniversary...

Twenty years ago TODAY, I met Jesus - committed my life to Him, and fell head over heels in love! I dedicated my life to Him and  I seriously cannot believe it was 20 years ago. Wow! He is the best thing that has ever happened to me. And He is the reason I am write this blog and the reason I am writing and self-publishing my upcoming book.

So it's fitting that today of all days I share with you the title and a little taste and idea of what this phantom book you've been hearing of for months will be!  I am thrilled, excited, and thankful to share it with you - my dear sweet friends and readers! Ahhhh. And totally nervous too!

So, without further adieu... announcing....  my upcoming book's title and working cover!!!!!

There it is.

The Lord gave me this name for my book a year ago and it's exciting to see this next step take place. What do ya think?

In a few days I will be sharing the book's website with you, chapter names, more idea of the content, and possibly a pre-ordering option! But until then I wanted to share a few words.

The Darling Diaries is oh so close to my heart. **insert tears!** (I am so passionate and emotional about this book because it's my heart on paper, for you.) I've written this book over the course of a year. One of the sweetest, hardest, most healing years of my life.

Mostly because - oh how I wish I could invite you all into my home. A cheery fire burning, my signature sugar cookies (with the best icing on planet earth) on a small mint green plate on the table. We all wear our comfiest yoga pants. I would hand you a cup of coffee (with your favorite creamer), & we would sit around on cozy couches for a girl's night in. Laughing til we cry, crying for real, & chatting about everything....dreams, falling in love, making mistakes, guys, dating, sex, marriage, babies, disappointments, failures, breakups (of all kinds), endings, beginnings, loss, beauty, heartaches, hurts, confidence, secrets, and Jesus and everything else.

But since I cannot, I wrote you a book instead.

May it be a little love letter from me to you.

Or maybe, from Him to you.

Quite honestly, I've grown tired of picking up Christian women's books and feeling a disconnect, an impersonal 10 step program to being godlier. That feeling of being preached at. I'm tired of 25 Steps To Being Godly. I'm tired of hearing from perfectly coiffed women who tell me how to get my act together and start acting like I'm OK when I'm not. Tired of reading boring books that drone on and on and on in a way that is irrelevant to my life and makes me feel caged, not free. Condemned, not loved. Judged, not forgiven.

The pages in The Darling Diaries are really honest. They are tear-stained. I share my story in a way I never have on this blog. It's my mess - it's real, it's vulnerable and it was pretty hard to write. I am far from perfect and I do not have all the answers. But I do have one answer, and that is the Man I found who heals my broken heart and romances me in a way no one else can. And I just have to tell you about Him.

It reads like a coffee date. The kinda coffee date that starts in the early afternoon and melts slowly and effortlessly into dinnertime. Just like our coffee date conversations, it is messy and real, fluid and random at times. But at the end, just like our random, real coffee dates – it’s tied up as if with a sweet little bow and all the messiness kinda makes sense.
The Darling Diaries is for.....

You teenage girls who are scared and excited and hurting all at the same time in a new season of life and you just need a friend to be real with you.

For the college girls who are wading the murky waters of dating, guys and confusing, hard, beautiful real adult life.

For you precious single ladies who are waiting and wondering, feeling forgotten... and very alone. Secretly crying yourself to sleep 4 nights out of 7, waiting for dreams.

For the wives and mamas - happy, tired, and in desperate need of "me time" with Him.

For the working girls who are weary.

For you who have dreams as big as the sky.

And you who hold secret dreams you're too afraid to tell a soul.

For you who have been deeply, searingly hurt by the kind of religion that poses as Jesus but isn't Him at all.

It's for you grandmothers who have all the wisdom in the world but need a little inspiration, a little reminder.

For you heartbroken women of all ages and stages.

For anyone who has tasted loss and grief like a best friend.

Anyone who needs to be reminded of who they really are. Who they can be.

Anyone who feels alone in this dark world.

For you who messed up and failed and feel like it's over.

For you who feel like life is just so unfair. And it makes no sense.

For you who have run so far, you need to be reminded that He is still chasing you.

For you who want to live for Him, but get beaten down and confused at times by the blurred lines of a culture that screams at us to be anything but pure, strong, gracious, rare women of God.

For you who need someone, something to hold onto in hopelessness - who crave a love that will last forever, never let you down, never fade, never hurt you, never leave you. Who want to meet this Prince I call Jesus, but don't know how.

For you who just need to curl up at the end of a long day with a cup of tea and a book you can relate to, and smile and laugh and cry and feel stronger and somehow not-so-alone.

This book is for the countless women who have shared their stories with me. After almost two years of blogging, you’ve blown me away with your hearts for the Lord, your openness, your heartache, your struggles, and the way you so strongly take the broken pieces and give them to Him.

Rest between His shoulders. Give Him your “hot mess”.

If you let Him, He can take it and make it into something beautiful.

More to come, loves.

Thank you for reading, for being there. For "getting it."

Check out my book's Pinterest board and pin any of these photos you'd like - I want to share this book with any women who might need it.

Pray for me as I finish it up and format it. I am so excited to make it available to you in the next few months, dear ones. I hope and pray it somehow touches you and changes you for the better. I will be updating you as these days go by on specific release dates, so stay tuned!

Also planning to make it available not only in e-Book format available for download but also in print on demand so you old fashioned readers (like me!) can have a hard copy if you'd like.

Love and a hug.
To you and you and you.
I really love you all oh so much.

The book is coming along, dear friends! Thank you for ALL the sweet encouragement and love. Means the world and I will be honored if you take time to read it... it is my heart on paper and a love letter to you. More on that Wednesday :)

But today, I want to share a little somethin' with you... along with an outfit!

I've been thinking about how misrepresented the Lord can be. How people can say they are acting and working for God, but they aren't. How we can misunderstand who He is.

When He is mercy. Grace. Love.... love, love love.

Jesus loves you oh so much. And I want you to know that today.

If you really knew - you would change your mind.
If you knew the God I know, you would have the time.....

an old, old song. but i love it.

"What you don't know can lead you to the extremes
Shunning help though you feel a need

You fear to be caught limping and you lose your place

And leaning on the everlasting arms is not your taste
Maybe you've heard those stories, laughed at what you saw on TV

Or felt disgust as He was used an excuse for bigotry

But I've got to tell you, that's not what it's all about

'Cause the truth I know will turn you around

If you really knew
You would change your mind

If you knew the God I know

You would have the time
If you take a chance
I know you will find

Everything you need in love of another kind

I too have been hurt by those who claimed to show the way
It was crazy, their two faces like night and day

But you don't stop believing 'cause you once been burned

In everything there's a lesson learned
Man is imperfect, there is just one perfect soul

So much more loving than than one that you've been shown

How long is it gonna take for you to realize?

I apologize to you on behalf of the untrue
Because the God I know would never do the things they do

Mercy and compassion on the right and on the left

Can you give anymore than your last breath?
Oh, too hard to see, well, put your mind aside
And stop using fear to hide behind

God's love is enough for you,
And it's waiting if you only knew."

Last night, I saw little trend going on Instagram (find me here!) and decided to join in. I love the community on IG, and love getting to know people better. I shared 20 things about me and asked anyone to join in who wanted! It was so fun to read comments and posts, learning random facts about IG friends! I thought I'd do it here too - so, friends - here are 20 things about me. It's kinda like a virtual coffee date! Join in below by leaving a comment and share some random facts about you. Or share a post on your blog just like this and leave the link in my comments so we can check it out!
